PRECHORUS

When riding on the open B string, I'm fretting the low E with my thumb
and muting the high e with the tip of my index finger, the flesh of
the lower part of my index finger (for the C#m7 chord at the 9th fret)
or with the little finger of my right hand (for the F# chords).

Video: How to play Darwin Deez – Radar Detector on Guitar

Radar Detector is one of my favourite (most fun) songs to play on guitar. I worked out this arrangement by ear in order to be able to play the song on a 6-string in standard tuning. It includes a “two-guitar”, riding effect on the open B string (I’ve listened to the record hundreds of times and still can’t decide if it’s done on two guitars or not).

When I first played this, on my other Stratocaster, I found it difficult to fret without it sounding messy. There’s a fair bit of manoeuvring the left hand “just-right” to allow the open B string to ring out whilst muting everything else.

Something about the neck profile and higher action on this Japanese Special Run Stratocaster though seemed to make it easier to get my hands around it all, with fewer nasty harmonics to boot.

I got excited about this and recorded this video, getting a fairly good take before royally messing up the super easy bit at the end 🙄.

When I posted it on YouTube, a couple of people asked me for a tab.

It’s taken me a long while to get around to it, but here it is. The transcription probably isn’t perfectly faithful to the record but I think it creates a good effect that is really fun to play.
